Long Realty Green Valley Office Keeps on Shining!
This year’s Relay for Life walk began on April 1 at 9:00 p.m. and continued through 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2nd. This marks the first year the Green Valley/Sahuarita area has participated in a 24 hour walk rather than a 12 hour walk. We were up to the task with help from cancer survivors who walked the first lap. The second lap was for caregivers only. All told, we had approximately 350 – 400 walkers participate in this event including 9 youth teams.
Kim Brewis, Sales Associate in our Green Valley Office, was Team Captain for the Green Valley/Sahuarita Association of REALTORS. Kim devoted her time and energy organizing agent participation from soliciting personal donations to making sure there were walkers on the track around the clock to walking the track with her husband Jon to assure that someone was on the track at all times. Kim and Jon are both cancer survivors.
Karen Anderson, also a Sales Associate in our Green Valley Office, was Chairman for Corporate Sponsorships. Karen had a stellar “run” having raised over $25,000 in Corporate Sponsorships including a donation from our Long Cares Foundation. Her goal was $2000. Way to go Karen!
Just after dusk a luminaria ceremony was held. People bought and decorated over 600 luminaria bags with the names of cancer survivors and in honor of their friends and family who succumbed to the disease. The bags were placed around the track and lit. The names on each of the bags were read, one by one, at which time the person related got on the track with a lit light stick and walked silently. At the end of the name reading, a bag piper played. It was an extremely moving event. Karen is quoted as saying “We’re just thrilled with the success of the relay. Whatever we can do to give people more birthdays, it works for us!”
We are continuing to accept contributions through August 2011. To make a contribution, contact Kim Brewis at 907-3628 or email Kim at firstname.lastname@example.org Kim can walk you through the easy, on-line donation process. Many thanks everyone (too many to mention by name, but we know who you are) for helping make this a great event!
